Viceland Orders Comedy Starring James Van Der Beek As Diplo

After a tremendous launch in 2016 with hit series such as Noisey and Fuck, That's Delicious, this year will see Viceland branch out into the world of scripted television.  Their first series: a comedy tentatively titled What Would Diplo Do?, starring none other than James Van Der Beek as the famed DJ.

The series is based off a promotional video for Diplo's Mad Decent Block Party events Van Der Beek starred in last summer (see above video). Viceland has ordered six episodes of What Would Diplo Do?, which in the initial report of the series by Deadline, is described as "“Louie meets WorldStar HipHop crossed with This Is Spinal Tap", which sounds like it could otherwise be worded as "EDM Curb Your Enthusiasm"

This will be Diplo's second television project, following the FXX cult hit Major Lazer, which has been renewed for a second season. What Would Diplo Do? will also see involvement from Viceland co-presidents Eddy Moretti, and Academy Award winner Spike Jonze, the former of whom describes Van Der Beek's portrayal of DJ in a way that seems to liken him to Larry David. "James’ interpretation of Diplo is like a modern cipher into which we can read the whole of human existence…or not,” says Moretti.

Look out for What Would Diplo Do?, debuting on Viceland later this year.
