Judd Apatow to Record Netflix Stand-Up Special at Just for Laughs
Judd Apatow is set to return to his stand-up roots at this year's Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. The director is set to perform 4 shows in Place des Arts' intimate 5e Salle from July 28-29. The shows will be recorded live by Netflix, for what will become Apatow's first-ever comedy special. Last year, the director appeared at JFL to receive the festival's Generation Award, along with surprise pop-ups at events headlined by the likes of Jeff Ross and Seth Rogan. Apatow also performed a last minute show of his own at the Mainline Theatre, which holds all but 102 seats.
Netflix have recently been excelling in the realm of stand-up specials. The subscription service in currently projected to release at least one new special per week for the rest of the year, after an already whopping 25 in 2016. Other comedians set for upcoming specials include Chris Rock, Gad Elmaleh, and Jerry Seinfeld, the latter two of whom are also set to perform together at this year's Just for Laughs festival.
This isn't the first time Apatow has teamed up in Netflix for exclusive content. The funnyman also serves as co-creator and executive producer on Love, the entertainment empire's critically acclaimed romantic comedy series. An Instagram post by Apatow shared yesterday suggests the show may in the midst filming its third season.
Aside from Netflix-related efforts, the director recently premiered a documentary on the Avett Brothers, and has already began work on another focusing on the late Garry Shandling. The former was acquired by HBO, and is set for a widespread release later this year.
