Top 5 Clubs to Hit Up During Montreal’s Grand Prix Weekend

Anyone with an itch for a party should know that Montreal is the place to be this weekend, as it hosts the Canadian Grand Prix. The weekend is arguably the busiest in the city, and has been known to bring in as many as 400,000 visitors in its recent past.

For every 1 visitor that comes for the races, there are 4-5 that come for the festivities surrounding the weekend. It is a time in which Montreal’s vibrant nightlife scene truly gets its proper shine, with hundreds of international figures flooding the scene each year.

That being said, one might feel overwhelmed with all the celebrations that there is to choose from. If this is the case for you, fear not, as we have compiled a list of our 5 favorite spots that you should hit up this coming weekend:

5. Wunderbar

Conveniently located with the luxurious W Hotel, Wunderbar will be the place to be this weekend if you are a fan of the Old-School. From esteemed legends such as Grammy winner DJ Jazzy Jeff and Shade 45’s Tony Touch, to newer notables like Splyce and Bieber tour DJ Tay James, Wunderbar is one club that is sure to have its attendees groovin’ all weekend long.

4. Apt. 200

If the fact that this St. Laurent street sensation was recently voted #10 on Cult MTL’s “Best of Montreal” list in the “Best Pick-up Spot” category wasn’t enough to get you wanting to hit up Apt. 200 this weekend, it may be worth mentioning its impressive list of DJs coming through to spin.

While frequent Drake and Rick Ross producer Boi-1da will kick off the celebrations tomorrow night, there is also a very plausible chance of Montreal legend A-Trak making an appearance at the club’s “Fool’s Gold Family Matters” event following his performance at a Fool’s Gold block party just down the street, which is being organized by the same people who own/run Apt.

3. Newspeak

Formerly a more Punk and Hip-Hop-oriented venue named Cabaret Underworld prior to its closure and subsequent revamp from late 2014 to early 2015 (it was also the location of the very first Mr. Wavvy interview with Chali 2na), the newly established Newspeak is now home to some of the year’s best electronic events in the city, a favorite for CEGEP/University students who look to have a good time without beating up their bank accounts.

This weekend’s festivities at the club include a cluster of international talent (Australia’s What So Not, UK’s Kenton Slash Demon, and California’s Shawn Wasabi), along with some notable hometown heroes serving as the opening acts (Tibe, Dear Lola, Robert Robert, and more).

2. New City Gas

For this year’s Formula One weekend, Montreal’s favorite EDM club will be throwing not one, but six fantastic events. While its outdoor terrace will offer vibes better suited towards the House-heads (Guy Gerber, Claude VonStroke, Lee K), its indoor mainstage offers an interesting array of DJs, including French favorite Tchami and the Boss Dogg himself, Snoop Dogg (aka DJ Snoopadelic)!

With Snoop’s next album Coolaid dropping on Canada Day (July 1st), this could very well be fans’ opportunity to hear unearthed music from the Doggystyle don before it hits the streets.

1. École Privée

This Montreal hotspot will be celebrating its one-year anniversary this weekend and is certainly reeling in the years in a major way. Aside from a Rolls Royce-hosted edition of the club’s weekly “Please Don’t Sit” series, appearances will be made by frequent Kanye West collaborators Virgil Abloh (Ye’s creative director) and Theophilus London (Yeezy executive-produced his recent Vibes album, in turn London provided background vocals on Kanye’s The Life of Pablo) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Equipped with one of the world’s best soundsystems (Funktion-One), an irresistible “porno wall”, and a forever-engaged dancefloor, École Privée is the place to be this Grand Prix Weekend. Just make sure to remember your uniform!
